A painting I did of the Lewis River outside
of Woodland, WA. A quick study I did from my
reference photo and hopefully I will do another
painting of the scene at a slower pace. I used
a palette knife and brush on this one.
I signed up for the new 30 paintings in 30 days,
but have been very busy with unexpected things
that have taken time away from painting. I also
haven't post on my blog for sooo long, it seems
everyone has shifted over to Instagram and blogs
now seems so out dated. I looked through my read-
ing lists and very few artists are even posting on
there blogs. Is anyone out there???
Before enjoying this orange, I decided
to snap a few photos of it while peeling
it. Always enjoy a delicious juicy orange,
and this one was good. Painted it in two
sittings, first, letting the orange of the
fruit color dry for a week. On finishing it
I "oiled in" and painted in the white and
shadows of the orange and adjusted the
background.
I had a fun 4 x 4 inch frame that needed a painting
that I had sitting around for awhile, so this is what
I did in a short amount of time. I love aspen trees
with that fun bark and fall leaves. One little
painting I get to look at every day. Isn't that
what making art is all about?
Dusk on the Canal

The reference photo of these boats was so dark it
was very hard to make out the shapes and colors of
the scene. I use a free photo editing site that is
called BeFunky. It is great for adding text,
fixing colors and exposure, but mostly for fixing
a photo that is a little tilted. My challenge to
myself was to paint loose and delete details. My
brain is wired to love detail. Hard to paint
loose for me. This painting was done mostly with palette knives.
I was so frustrated with my first attempt on a
completely different subject, scraped it off and
decided to still use the scrapped paint on a
This one was from a photo I took as we were
finishing our lunch in a Vietnamese restaurant
and the sun was streaming in through the window
and across the table. I love to paint the effects
of sunshine on objects. My challenge was to capture
the warmth and reflections.
I visited Victoria, B.C., Canada this summer taking many
photos of the area. A few inspired me enough to want to
paint. A street scene looks simple to paint at first, but
there is so much detail with buildings, people, ect,
you have to edit out everything that is not important. I
need to do this even more in future ones.Susan Lileshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14406571118819598593noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8793385025929214091.post-42747392862929695062017-01-05T02:44:00.001-07:002017-01-05T02:44:41.326-07:00Day 5- 30 In 30 Days Challenge

I received a new color, bright blue, in the mail
the other day so was excited to use it in a painting.
It is full of tint, holding its brightness with white.
I use WN, Williamsburg, Utrecht, Grumbacher professional
grade and Gamblin. This new color is Utrecht.
I painted this to learn how to make objects, such
as the rocks in the stream to appear underwater.
The secret is all in the shadows and lighter colors.
I scrapped more paint off this one than I usually
do and rearranged the rocks for a better composition.
This is a learning challenge, not to have
masterpieces.
I have not painted for a few days for the
30 day challenge, I had other orders from
my Etsy shop to get in the mail. I tried
another seascape and painted this one with
palette knives and a few brushes. I am
really liking the palette knife where I
can load it with a variety of colors and
get the effects as in the rocks with
little effort.
Decided to experiment with color and not use
all local colors. I chose the warm vs cool
palette on this one. I probably scrapped
this painting three times in various places
because of the mudding of colors that happen
when you have complimentary colors side by
side and you need to blend them. I used the
palette knife and brushes which helped alot.Susan Lileshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14406571118819598593noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8793385025929214091.post-89809870054987855272016-01-20T16:11:00.001-07:002016-01-21T01:37:41.762-07:00Day 20 - Inlet

I painted this with a palette knife and a few
brushes to smooth out some areas or add a few
more details in the sky and rocks. This is not
a scene from my reference photos but a mixture
of memories of favorite places. I got burnt out
doing fast and simple smalls so this is what
I needed to do for a nice break.Susan Lileshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14406571118819598593noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8793385025929214091.post-86576309605315181222016-01-16T04:16:00.000-07:002016-01-16T04:16:06.332-07:00Day 16 - Spotted Cows

Done with animals for a while and on to
a landscape or two. I have had a few
paintings that were "scrapers". Get out
the spachula and scrape off the ugly
mess you are making. Learn from it and
move on.
I have been painting a series of cows and
like the big brown eyes of this calf. I plan
on doing some landscapes with a painting
Wanted to add a little humor to the paintings and
with this pig in hog heaven without a care in the
world. If he only knew that someday he'll be pork
chops and bacon. Susan Lileshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14406571118819598593noreply@blogger.com0
