Day 29 - Incoming Tide

oil on gessobord
8 x 10

I have not painted for a few days for the
30 day challenge, I had other orders from
my Etsy shop to get in the mail. I tried
another seascape and painted this one with
palette knives and a few brushes. I am
really liking the palette knife where I
can load it with a variety of colors and
get the effects as in the rocks with
little effort.

Day 23

Oil on gessbord
8 x 10

Decided to experiment with color and not use
all local colors. I chose the warm vs cool
palette on this one. I probably scrapped
this painting three times in various places
because of the mudding of colors that happen
when you have complimentary colors side by
side and you need to blend them. I used the
palette knife and brushes which helped alot.

Day 20 - Inlet

oil on gessobord
8 x 10

I painted this with a palette knife and a few
brushes to smooth out some areas or add a few
more details in the sky and rocks. This is not
a scene from my reference photos but a mixture
of memories of favorite places. I got burnt out
doing fast and simple smalls so this is what
I needed to do for a nice break.

Day 16 - Spotted Cows

oil on gessobord
6 x 6

Done with animals for a while and on to
a landscape or two. I have had a few
paintings that were "scrapers". Get out
the spachula and scrape off the ugly
mess you are making. Learn from it and
move on.

Day 15 - Little Calf

oil on gessobord

8 x 10

I have been painting a series of cows and
like the big brown eyes of this calf. I plan
on doing some landscapes with a painting
knife soon.

Day 14 - Hog Heaven

oil on gessobord 8 x 10

Wanted to add a little humor to the paintings and
with this pig in hog heaven without a care in the
world. If he only knew that someday he'll be pork
chops and bacon.

Red Shoes - # 13

oil on gessobord

Loved the red tennis shoes in the sun in reference photo
and the memories of the kids riding their skate
boards.

Let's Go - #12

oil on 6 x 6 gessobord

Took a little longer to do a more detailed
painting of a bicycle and the shadow across
the pavement. I have a series of these that
I have done or are planning to do. Love the
red paint on them.

Day #11 - 30 Paintings in 30 Days

oil on gessobord 6 x 6

Love being at the beach and now that it is
winter I can't wait to be in the sun again.
Always hard to paint such small figures, but
took on the challenge.

Day 10 - Call Me

Oil on 8 x 8 gessobord

The younger generation will not get the title. They
are the cell phone, cell tower generation. I remember
the day of party lines, knowing your ring and listening
into neighbors conversations when we were little. How
things change through the years. Now everybody has their
attention on Facebook and their iPhones.

Day 8 - Whoops!

No painting listed on my blog today. On the
30 paintings in 30 days I accidentally uploaded
the same painting I put up the day before. It's
late at night- I need some sleep ya think.

Day 8 - Summer Cows

oil 6 x 6 on gessobord

I have missed a few days of painting -life
gets in the way, but I will paint on.
This one was a quick painting of a group of
cows I took a few summers ago. Finally had
the desire to paint a few cows from this
reference photo. Left out many of the details
as in trees, other cows and the field they
were in. The photo was rather dark with
a bad exposure. Pleased with this one.

Day 6- Mountain Meadow

oil on 6 x 6 gessobord

I did a black and white value sketch out of my imagination
of a mountain scene and went with the design to do this painting.
I got a little carried away with the center grass and lost the
oringinal line drawing which had much more eye appeal. I need to
be aware of boring areas as I paint and get out my scraper
and get it fixed right away. I got a little to fixed on
detail with this one and should have used more colors in
shadows and light areas. So much to learn and experiment
with. Trying to unwire my brain to KISS-Keep It Simple
Stupid!

Day 4 - Jars of Jam

oil 6 x 6 on gessobord

I set up some jars of jam and did not do a pre drawing
of this one. It is not perfect, but in the challenge we
are not striving for perfection. I tried to do this one
under two hours, I think I did it in an hour and a half.
Tried to convey the appearance of glass and reflections.

Day Two - Store Front

oil 8 x 10

Day two for 30 Paintings in 30 Days.
I used a reference photo for this on from morgue file and after finishing
this painting noticed the windows were a little off-left leaning...what!
I can fix it if I decide to repaint this one in the future, but will be
careful of reference photos in the future, but for practice it was a good
one to get my lights and shadows in and leave out alot of detail.

30 Paintings in 30 Days

oil 8 x 10

This is my first painting for the challenge on Leslie Saeta's
blog 30 Paintings in 30 Days. This painting in oil is on
a cheaper canvas cardboard which was not intended to be
sold. I did not pre-draw the roses, just puttingthe paint down fast
with a painting knife and some brushes. I hope to keep up with
the challenge which is intended to help us as artists to develop
our style and loosen, develope better brushstrokes and use less details
in our paintings.

Ready To Go

down for this composition.

Pink Dahlia

6 x 6 oil on gessobord

I took a photo of this dahlia blossom
at the local flower nursey on a sunny
day. Thought about buying one, but I have
little room in my flower beds for a
big plant like this one. May have to
replace something someday!

Life Is Good

Loved the reflections on this one.
A calm day with little wind on a
beautiful day.

My Passion

I was recently encouraged by the folks at Patience Brewster ornaments and cards to write about my passion for art and painting. I'm sure I acquired my love for art through my artistic ancestors. My great grandmother was Sophie Marie Mitchell, who was known in the Napa Valley area for her watercolor paintings of the local wildflowers, which are now part of the Napa Valley Museum. I did not know of her paintings until years after I had started painting in watercolor. One inspiration that stands out in my mind is seeing the John Singer Sargent exibition at the National Museum of Art in Washington, D.C. back in 1999 and all the other pieces of art by Rembrant, Homer, Monet, Eakins, ect. It was so beautiful!

watercolor by Sophie Marie Mitchell, 1890's.

I was also inspired by my Aunt Joanne Thompson, who was the featured artist for the Walter Foster art booklet, "It's Fun to Sketch with Pencil and Crayon, Joanne Thompson, by Walter Foster"

I practiced many of her drawings from this book to improve my own portrait drawing, which was the beginning of my love of the portrait. I would strongly suggest that drawing and sketching is an excellent habit to develope if you want to improve your painting skills in a short amount of time. Other talented family members were my grandfather, who was an architect in the San Fransico area and an uncle who was a commerical artist who designed the girl watcher sunglasses.

As an artist, I'm my own worst critic and I probably wouldn't be posting very many photos of my paintings, but this blog is my painting journal to see my own improvement as I strive to reach my goals. Of course it is nice to get imput from others artists. My goal is to gain confidence and loosen-up in my style as in the artists that I admire. Some days I think my brain is wired just to do realistic work. I would also love to paint work that has a "timeless" quality where it would be enjoyable to a buyer over a long period of time. Classic art in museums have this quality to them and it is loved by many generations. Someday, I may paint that masterpiece!

As a child I was always drawing, coloring with crayons, and doing "oil paintings by numbers". When I was about 11 or 12 years old I painted this painting of my horse and my mother and father were very impressed and encouraged me to continue painting. It is uplifting to get feedback from other famous artists when you post a painting on social media and they take their time to respond and compliment your work. It gives you hope and the desire to carry on. I also have shown my watercolor paintings in the Montana Watercolor Society's show and received some awards and nice compliments by the judges.

The artists that I admire and study their techniques are:

Watercolor:

Joseph Zbukvic
Shirley Trevena
Liu Yi
Ted Nuttall
Jeannie McGuire

Oil painters:

Mike Wise
Richard Schmid
Colley Whisson
Tibor Nagy

I have many, many more artists that I follow and admire so it would be hard to list them all.

My other interests, hobbies and bussinesses are my Etsy Shop for Susan Liles where I do typography subway signs for customers' family memory boards.

This keeps me very busy around the holidays. I also love to get outside and work in the yard and garden.

My 10' trailing nasturtiums that have climbed my rhododendron and bushes!

I also love to travel and explore our area in which we live and snoop around in vintage shops and find treasures for the house.

During one of our trips I found the house my parents rented when I was first born. It is very old now and has changed from the description my Mother gave me.
